Design proposal for new cultural centre in North Ossetia, Russia

Foster + Partners has been selected to create a design proposal for a new music and cultural centre, initiated by renowned conductor Valery Gergiev, for the town of Vladikavkaz in North Ossetia. Accommodating a music school, library and state-of-the-art concert venue, the centre will be a focus for regeneration in the region and a symbol of hope for the community.

Situated on the Terek River at the foothills of the Caucasus mountains, Vladikavkaz is a striking historic town, founded in 1784. The concept will relate the new to the old, but at the same time create a building that represents optimism for the future. Situated between the town’s central square and the river, the urban context will act as a powerful influence, and the reinvention of this valuable civic space will be a principal concern.

The practice’s experience on a number of cultural projects, including the widely accredited The Sage Gateshead music centre in Tyneside, where Valery Gergiev recently conducted four performances will provide valuable insights for the development of the design strategy.

Norman Foster said:
“I am deeply honoured to be working with Valery Gergiev on the creation of a new music centre for Vladikavkaz. This is an opportunity to address the spiritual as well as the practical needs of a community - to provide a symbol for a brighter future for a region that has suffered from a troubled history.”
